The German supermarket group Edeka has recalled a contaminated spice from its shelves after it was found to contain pesticides.

Environmental group Greenpeace discovered traces of pesticide in the Spice Islands brand of mild paprika in a study, the company announced late on Tuesday from its headquarters in Hamburg .

Paprika is among the most beloved spices in German kitchens. The amount of pesticide is above the amount allowed by food regulations, and the company said it had encouraged the spice manufacturer to recall the product entirely.
